3D Hubs Forum

Everyday we make changes and improvements to 3D Hubs website. If you have ideas for improvements or feature requests, this is the place to drop them. Get other people to vote up your ideas to accelerate the focus we give to it.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  1. Allow customers to verify a hub address

Instead of sending a postcard for verification which is not always practical, allow customers to verify a hub address after they have collected a part from there.

    • Make receipts look more professional.

Adding the ability to configure the look of a receipt would be appreciated. At least make them look similar to the Invoice layout.

      • Improve the location information and make it easier to access

I visited your site on recommendation of a colleague on a course I am taking. I just wanted to know where the 3d printers are near to where I live and accessible by public transport. Could not find that information without joining up and even then it is just maps in a general area. needed more precise information. Even though I am in Dublin ROI on my profile my phone number option was suggesting +44 which is the UK. Please improve your location information. I don't want to browse loads of stuff and scoll down. I just want a quick…

        • allow customers to retract an order while it is still in the "Hub review" stage

I am brand new to 3D printing, and without realizing it I created a model completely unsuitable to FDM printing. I worked this out *after* having submitted it to a hub, but the only way I had to retract the order was to leave a comment to the hub owner on the order -- then he was able to cancel it on my behalf.

This then took me to the page where alternative hubs are suggested based on customer needs. I wanted to find out more information about the suggested hubs, but the only clickable thing I could find was…

Hi Jonathan, thank for sharing your experience and feedback. Makes sense to improve this workflow. In the past we’ve removed a lot of extra clicks and confirmations to make the platform easier to use, this is a side-effect of that which we need to address.

          • Customer selects service

Allow customer to select service(s) they need in enquiry.

On 3d hubs, customers should be allowed to select between the 3 main services: 3d printing, 3d design, or 3d scanning.

Currently how the site is set up it is a bit confusing to my customers and potential customers on how to go about purchasing my 3d design services only. Sometimes these customers just want a digital file created for them that they can take to a different printer or print on there own printers. Though I currently don't offer scanning services I would image the same thing can occur where…

Thanks for sharing. I’ll bring this up with the product team and see how we can improve the flow for ordering modeling or scanning without 3D Printing.

            • Support of local languages in web search engines

It is difficult to find 3d hubs in web search engines when not searching in English. For example in Brno, Czech republic, if someone wants to find a 3d printing service, he would probably use expression like "3d print brno" but written in Czech language "3d tisk brno". It is natural to search in local language because customer wants local service, not a service placed somewhere in UK or USA. It is very unlikely to find 3d hubs using Czech language.

I do not know how web search engine business works exactly, but I know a certain keywords could be…

              • How to allow CNC machines & Lasers to be treated as printers, to fit them within your current framework

I know there are already 3-4 declined requests for CNC machines and laser-cutters to be added in, but I was thinking quite a few of them could be added within the framework already established. Hub owners would need to provide materials, just like they do with printing, so owners could establish stock materials and stock sizes with prices. The algorithm could then just price based on the smallest stock that's big enough to fit the part.

For CNC you could go one step further and use an approximation value of the % of material that would need to be removed…

Hi Jonathan, thanks for this detailed description. We’re watching this space closely, at this moment I can’t give you any concrete updates or timelines but since CNC and Lasercuting are both digital manufacturing technologies we could potentially see them on 3D Hubs in the future.

When printing an order, customers appreciate staying in the loop. It would be very nice if photos could be uploaded in the communication thread with the customer.

Can you add an option to set prices in another currencies? For example in Country local currency, $ and euro or auto convert price to another currency. I would like to enter foreign market but I'm afraid people doesn't know how much value is my local currency. It could be also like a hint how much +- is it in (for example) $

Hi Kamil, we’ll look into this if we get more requests for it. Right now seems like a fairly rare issue as most people order from nearby countries where they know the currency.

                    • Ability to add custom status to jobs and color codes for advance order identification/sorting

Add more statuses other than Processing-then-straight to-Printing. Something on the lines of 'processed' would be helpful to siolate orders that have been processed but yet to put into production queue.

Maybe even color coding statuses for easier identification.

                        • Wall thickness checker, similar to Shapeways

Add an integrated model wall thickness, thin geometry checker. Same way Shapeways have on their site.

This will assess the model for build-ability based on technology & material used and alert customer about any thin geometry that wont build or dangerously thin (gradient from green to red perhaps?). It is then up to the customer if they want to proceed with the order.

This will eliminate unnecessary steps in order processing on hub's side as well as make order placement more intuitive on client side.

We have to deal with hands-on communications with the customers about thin areas and unbuildable…

                          • add the option ( checkbox ) for clients to allow stl file to be split for printing.

Recently I wanted to check the price on my own hub for a part that I had printed in 2 sections and joined. Because the stl was too large, my hub was not even listed as an option for the quote.
If you give clients the option to say that they are prepared to have their print done in sections and joined, then the client will be given more hubs as options to get quotes from, and more hubs have the opportunity to quote on prints that can be split for printing.

                              • Ability to enter/log your invoice number & date against a completed order and have that in the order list as filter item

Add an 'invoice nr' and 'invoice date' field to the complete order context. So as a hub it makes live easier to administer your orders. Then also have those two properties available in the orders list and export feature.

When in the flow of submitting a model, many hubs are listed as options, but the only information available on the main view is what materials are offered. If a customer wishes to be discerning about what kind of printer (or printing process) is used, they have to navigate to the Hub's page in a separate tab, and the printer information there does not actually tell you what process is used. An experienced user would "just know", for instance, that the Object Eden260VS uses a variant of stereolithography that deposits resin using something akin to an inkjet print head, but…

We try to keep the printers as much out of the checkout as possible, since we have around a 1000 different models we’re afraid it will be too complex for the customers. We do allow users to search/filter by printer type. We also give explanation per material/technology combination. We’re working on a step by step material/technology wizard which should be tested in the coming weeks. If you want to be involved in the testing I would be happy to connect you with the team.

                                    Best,
                                    Brian

This has happened to me a few times.
                                    1) Customer will submit an order for X model.
                                    2) I'll check the model, fix any errors with pricing and "accept" the order, 3d hubs will request payment at that point.
                                    3) the customer adds or replaces the models submitted, changing the size of the order (I've had a customer add over 100 hours to the print time and still expect me to hit the quoted deadline) or upload a model that the slicer calculates the volume incorrectly, for example if the client asks for a 100% infill print that I adjust…

Hi Will, thanks for sharing this issue. We’ve seen it before and it does cause some unwanted behaviour every now and then.

I think what you’re suggesting makes sense, only downside is that it slows down the order process a bit, preventing customers who are ready to pay from paying, we’ll try to assess how big that downside is as it might impact the business our Hubs are getting. If it looks ok, we can plan this change.

                                    • distinguish between different parts and copies of the same part

Right now, the subsequent prints pricing option treats multiple different parts and multiple copies of a single part the same way. For almost any printer, setting up 10 parts is going to take way longer than setting up 10 copies of the same part, but there is no way to account for this. For some of our printers, this is really exaggerated and difficult to establish pricing for.

                                      • QuickBooks Integration

Integration with the online accounting software QuickBooks from Intuit. This would enable those of us running a Hub as part of a small business to reconcile transactions with full details and automatically apply the correct account designation such as "sales", "3D Hubs Fees", "Shipping" and "Tax".

As a small business owner, I need to record all of these values for tax filing purposes which are due monthly (sales tax) and quarterly (federal income tax).

                                        • Include NinjaFlex Filament in General Plastics and/or Rubber-like Plastics

NinjaFlex filament does not come up when searching under either "General Plastics" OR "Rubber-like Plastics" - It's in an "Other Materials" category that is very difficult to find even when you're looking for it (let alone allowing someone to find something new). Please add NinjaFlex to "General Plastics" and/or "Rubber-like Plastics" category
